Taken from Deadmarsh Fey, Chapter 2
âWhat happened?â Lockie whispered, as shakily as if he didnât trust his own voice.
âYou tell me,â said Roger. He kept his arms wrapped around himself, afraid heâd fall apart if he broke his hold.
âWhat did I say?â
It wasnât so much what you said as what you did, Roger thought, but didnât have the courage to speak this aloud to Lockie. âI havenât the foggiest,â he said instead. Letâs get that ironed out first, and then we can talk about the other person inside of you. âIt was gibberish. Something about hearts and bone and someone called Blood Wood. Whereâd you get all that, Lockie? What have you been filling your head with?â
âMust have been a nightmare.â
âWhen youâre awake?â
âItâs happened before.â
That was troubling. And it made Rogerâs mind up for him. This was life and death now. He knew what had to be done, and he didnât give a fig if Coffyn had an aneurism when he found out. âThatâs it. I donât care what your parents say, or anyone else, for that matter. That place is poison, and Iâm getting you out of it. Youâre being ruined in more ways than one, and if those nightmares began back thereâŠâ
âThis didnât start at Nethermarrow.â
Rogerâs arms uncrossed and fell to his sides. âThen where did it start? NotâŠhere?â
âI knew you wouldnât understand. Youâre too in love with this place to see its flaws.â
âFlaws? Deadmarsh? Rubbish.â
âNot flaws,â Lockie said, his brows furrowing so dramatically that they almost formed a solid, pale line across his forehead. âThatâs the wrong word.â He was silent for a moment, eyes narrowing to slits. âMalevolence.â
âDonât tell me youâre going to trot out the old âthis house was built on an ancient burial groundâ sham again, are you? Which evil is it this time? Celts? Druids? Take your Pict.â Rogerâs lips ticked up slightly at the edges. Heâd used that dreadful pun before, but it was folly to expect his cousin to laugh at it now.
Lockie turned on him a look that froze Rogerâs blood. âIâve seen its other side. I know what lives here, whatâs been slumbering for so long.â
A hollow pit opened up where Rogerâs heart was supposed to be. âHow would you know that?â
âI woke it up.â
